Our rabbits + DIY rabbit hutch

on Monday, July 25, 2011. Filed under:

I've been eye-ing for a rabbit hutch for quite some time now and the main aim was to get one without spending much. The last pet store I've been to displayed a "so-so" hutch priced at RM300! Ridiculous, right? Tell me about it. And so I looked around the house, searched for thrift ways to build a rabbit hutch with what we already have ... Guess what, sometimes, all we have to do is open our eyes and look ... The answer we are seeking probably right in front of our eyes!

I saw this (see image below) in our very own kitchen and I thought to myself, "We're gonna build a rabbit hutch out of it!"

It's the hyllis shelf that Hubby bought some time ago :)

Image taken from here.

I told Hubby about my idea and gladly he agreed to help me to build it. Thanks, Hubby! He took about a week to build it, with my help of course. We've barely spent our money on this, which is a jack-pot :) So, here it is - hacked ikea hyllis shelf turned into a fully-functional rabbit hutch:

There you have it! It turned out to be a great solution for a rabbit hutch. We turned the metal shelf upside down so that it can act as the manure tray that helps me a lot in cleaning works. Smart, eh? It is very mobile as the overall size and weight of the hutch is just nice. Paint or varnishes may cause rabbits to become ill or die so we left it as is. The hutch is not too tall nor too deep for me to reach for the rabbits. The best part is not a single nail can be found on it. We didn't want to injure our rabbits so we used self locking cable ties instead. As for the roof, it's a gift from my Hubby to our new babies ... Meet Simba & Teddy:

Thanks for looking!

Please do not let those poor rabbits walk around on wire mesh!! You wouldn't want to do that yourself.

Dear Louise, I can just delete your comment because it's just oh so easy. Am not going to do that yet. But listen, my rabbits are fine! They are healthy because I bring them to the vet regularly. They are normal, active and happy rabbits. This is something that you don't know because they are with me 24-7 and I don't even know you. If you could kindly link me to your blog or email or anything (man up a bit), then we can communicate.

Anyway, thanks for taking a few minutes of life to express your concern here.

I know nothing about rabbits, but I know no animal should have to walk on wire. Your cages are likely not big enough for them either.

Of course you're proud of your build, but your rabbits should be able to walk safely - without their feets pushing into wires with each step. Please look to a site for recommenations, and do better for your precious fuzzybuttz!

FYI, I've bought resting board for them. I don't have to report everything to you nor look for your advice. I have a certified vet/pet doctor advising me.

Anyway, thanks for your time and your unsolicited advice! Cheers!

People nowadays are just so over-reacted and exaggerated! There are many other problems in the world that need our attention, and yet they chose to consider this as the biggest trouble they face. Don't worry, people. I get your concerns and appreciate your opinions. But believe me, I treat my babies well. They are fine. I did not abuse them in any way, you can ask everyone who knows me (this is a ridiculous accusation and I may solicit advice from a lawyer if I need to).

To me, those with negative comments just love to put people down, as if they can do anything. I guess this is how Britney Spears once felt while all she was doing is protecting her son.
